Yes — and this is one of the most commonly overlooked requirements. NFPA 70E and NFPA 70B require that your arc flash risk assessment be reviewed any time system changes could affect the results, not just every five years. Adding motors or drives, replacing breakers, swapping fuses, expanding a facility, or even adjusting a breaker setting to stop nuisance tripping can all change incident energy calculations — sometimes dramatically. If your study doesn't reflect your current system, the labels on your equipment may be wrong, and workers relying on them are at risk.
It's a fair question — and the answer is that most of the work has to be repeated regardless of what the original study looked like. Field verification, equipment walkthroughs, updated utility fault data, re-entering changes into the model, re-running short circuit and coordination calculations, updating one-line diagrams, producing and applying new labels, and PE review — these steps are unavoidable because every calculation depends on the current state of your system. In our experience, fewer than 1% of facilities document every electrical change accurately enough to skip the site visit. The five-year update isn't a clerical refresh; it's a structured validation that your labels still reflect reality.

While NFPA 70E and IEEE 1584 don't explicitly mandate a PE stamp, most states classify arc flash studies as engineering services, meaning they must be performed or approved by a licensed Professional Engineer. In many states, a study performed without PE oversight can be invalidated — and in some cases, performing one without a PE is a misdemeanor or felony. Every Guidant arc flash study is reviewed and approved by a licensed PE. This isn't a formality; it means every calculation is defensible, every label reflects verified data, and you have an auditable record of due diligence.
